Covent Garden family treasure trail

Before Covid, I created a whole bunch of family ‘treasure trails’ for the kids. We loved them at the time, but they were a particularly great activity for a world in which you can travel but don’t want to spend too much time inside.

For this one, you start at Leicester Square tube station.

The points

The trail consists of different things the children have to spot. Each one is worth a number of points, linked to difficulty. There are 100 of these points available.

At any time, they can add to their points total by spotting:

  • A black cab - 2 points

  • A lamp-post with gold trimmings on - 1 point

  • A zebra crossing - 2 points

  • A red phone box - 3 points

If you do the trail, add your kids’ scores to the comments section and let’s set up a leaderboard!

Ok, let’s get started.

Here’s the trail as you can show the kids. Here is a version with extra clues so you know where to find everything.

The Trail

From Leicester Square tube station, walk down Cranbourne Street. At the corner with Great Newport Street:

For 15 points, find the policeman’s coat hook.

Walk south St Martin’s Lane:

For 10 points, stand underneath the Green Man

Turn right into Cecil Court

For 15 points, find “1894”

Turn left at the end and cross the road.

For 10 points, find a statue erected by English actors and actresses

Turn left down the side of the National Portrait Gallery and cross the road again.

For 10 points, run in a circle round “air”, “earth”, “sky" and 50 other words

Continue to the Strand and turn left.

For 10 points, find the secret passage to the white house with clock and flagpole

Turn left onto Maiden Lane and straight across down Chandos Place

For 5 points, go down London’s narrowest street

Turn right at the end.

For 15 points, point to the spinning ball

Continue along St Martin’s Lane. Keep looking to the left

For 10 points, spot the lion and the unicorn

Continue along St Martin’s Lane back to Leicester Square station

Here’s a map showing the route.

We really hope you’ve enjoyed it!

Do let us know in the comments how you got on. If you enjoyed this one, I’ll upload some of the other ones I created.
